Filling
A dental filling is a treatment to restore the health, function, integrity, shape and form of missing tooth structure as a result of caries (decay) or trauma.
Traditionally, fillings can be made of different materials including gold, silver amalgam, composite resin, metal and porcelain. The choice of filling material depends on the amount of natural tooth structure left, the shape of the cavity, esthetics and longevity. Dental Innovations offers the most popular and trusted choices in dental fillings.
- Direct Fillings: These are bonded composite resin fillings (sometimes called bonding or white fillings), which are teeth colored fillings that are directly built on the tooth. These can be placed on back teeth and front teeth.
- Indirect Fillings: Also called printed fillings or laboratory made fillings, these include inlays and onlays. These can be made of porcelain or metal. The tooth is ‘prepared’ for the indirect filling and moulds are made. The inlay or onlay is made in the laboratory and the dentist bonds or cements it to the tooth. They are commonly used in larger cavities or where there is significant loss of tooth structure on back teeth.
